Sugar Mountain, the nearby ski mountain has an elevation difference of 1,200 feet; this ski mountain has 8 different ski lifts, and 7 feet of beautiful snow annually covering its 20 runs. The 619 feet of drop at close by Hawksnest is sheer fun. Hawksnest has 6 feet of wonderful snow every season on its 12 ski slopes that are served by its 4 good ski lifts. 30% of the 20 acres of skiable territory at Hawksnest consist of difficult ski slopes. But there are great ski slopes for little ones and novices as well; 70% of the ski slopes are intermediate or beginner. There's a good type IV-V+ section of whitewater close by on Catawba River - North Fork, the 2.5-mile-long Linville segment. This segment of Catawba River - North Fork is advised for expert raft paddlers only. A close by category II whitewater run can be encountered on North Toe River; the Plumtree to Bush Rd/Rt. 19E section is 10 miles long. If by chance you would like to get dripping wet, this run of North Toe River is probably not for you. If you're seeking a grade IV-V+ whitewater run to paddle, you're in luck; the Linville Falls to Lake James segment is a great 16.4-mile-from-beginning-to-end piece of Linville River. This segment of Linville River is well suited for whitewater paddlers who have been whitewater paddling for a bit. You have to check circumstances before heading out; paddling can become risky.
